Large breeds are powerful, athletic dogs that typically weigh between 60 and 100 pounds at full maturity. Recognised across many AKC groups — working, herding, sporting, and hound — large breeds require careful weight management throughout their lives due to the significant stress their size places on joints and organs.
Large breeds take considerably longer to mature than smaller dogs, often not reaching their full adult weight until 18 months of age. Puppies of large breeds should be fed large-breed specific food to support controlled bone development and reduce the risk of hip dysplasia and osteochondrosis.
Key characteristics of large breeds:
- Adult weight typically between 60 and 100 pounds
- Fully grown between 15–24 months
- Higher risk of joint issues — weight monitoring is critical
- Require large-breed puppy food for healthy bone development
- Male and female weight standards differ significantly in most breeds
