Toy breeds are the smallest dog group recognised by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Despite their small size, toy breeds have big personalities, specific nutritional needs, and unique growth patterns compared to larger dogs.
Most toy breeds reach their full adult size between 8 and 12 months of age โ significantly faster than medium, large, or giant breeds. Because of their small body size, toy breed dogs are prone to specific health concerns including hypoglycemia, luxating patella, and tracheal collapse โ all of which can be influenced by maintaining a healthy weight.
Key characteristics of toy breeds:
- Adult weight typically under 12 pounds
- Fully grown between 8โ12 months
- Higher metabolic rate than larger breeds
- Require smaller, more frequent meals as puppies
- Same AKC weight standards for both male and female in most toy breeds
